Dr. Alvin Garrison, CEO
A Legacy of Leadership. A Lifetime of Impact.
Alvin Garrison is a nationally minded educational leader, executive coach, leadership consultant, and motivational speaker whose career reflects a lifelong commitment to transforming lives through education, empowering leaders, and creating opportunities for others to succeed. With 31 years of service to Kentucky’s schools, Garrison has built a legacy defined by historic firsts, organizational achievement, community service, and an unwavering belief in the power of leadership to change lives.
On July 1, 2026, Garrison retired from public education, closing a distinguished chapter of service while opening an exciting new chapter dedicated to developing leaders and strengthening organizations. His professional journey has taken him from the classroom to the superintendent’s office, where he broke barriers, challenged expectations, and helped shape the educational experiences of thousands of students.
Garrison made history as the first African American principal in Hardin County Schools, Kentucky. In 2013, he became the first African American superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools, Kentucky’s third-largest independent school district, serving more than 4,000 students and nearly 800 employees. He was the fourth African American superintendent in the Commonwealth and became the longest-serving African American superintendent in Kentucky’s history. His leadership journey stands as a testament to perseverance, vision, and the importance of opening doors for those who follow.
Throughout his career, Garrison served as a coach, teacher, assistant principal, principal, and superintendent. As principal of John Hardin High School, he helped lead the school to become one of Kentucky’s top-performing academic institutions. As superintendent, he embraced the responsibility of leading with purpose, building strong relationships, supporting educators, and advancing opportunities for students. His approach to leadership has always been rooted in the conviction that every child deserves an excellent education and every organization deserves leaders who are committed to making a difference.
Today, Garrison channels his experience and passion for leadership through Legacy Leadership Advisory Group, LLC, the consulting firm he founded to help individuals and organizations realize their full potential. Through executive coaching, leadership development, professional training, and motivational speaking, he equips leaders to navigate challenges, strengthen teams, inspire others, and build a lasting legacy. His work extends beyond education, bringing the lessons of public-sector leadership, organizational transformation, and relationship building to a broader range of clients. He also consults for Veregy, contributing his experience and expertise to organizational initiatives.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Garrison moved to Elizabethtown at the age of nine, where he was raised by his mother and grandmother. Their influence helped shape the character, resilience, and determination that would become hallmarks of his life and career. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in educational administration from Western Kentucky University.
Garrison’s commitment to service extends well beyond the schoolhouse. He has served on the boards of several organizations and as president of the Northern Kentucky Education Cooperative Services. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Radcliff Optimist Club’s Achievement in Education Award, the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce Education Award, and the NAACP Judge Larry Smith Humanitarian Award. In 2020, Governor Andy Beshear appointed him to the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage Board, part of the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet.
At the heart of Garrison’s work is a simple but powerful philosophy: leadership is not measured solely by the positions we hold, but by the people we develop, the barriers we break, and the lives we positively influence. His story demonstrates that where you begin does not determine how far you can go, and that true success is found in using your opportunities to create opportunities for others.
Although he has retired from public education, Garrison’s mission continues. Through Legacy Leadership Advisory Group, he remains committed to helping leaders discover their potential, organizations achieve their goals, and individuals recognize the possibilities before them. His next chapter is an extension of the work that has defined his life—leading with purpose, serving with integrity, and inspiring others to leave a legacy of their own.
Garrison is married to his wife, Shannon, and they enjoy life with their three toy poodles, Brick, Hank, and Lindy.
